Guns! Cars! Explosions! Alcohol! Suggestively named, morally ambiguous women! Why it's all the toxic tropes of classic male fulfilment fantasy franchise, James Bond! Only this time, M is a woman which makes everything Bond does, says and is, A-Okay... join our hosts as we take our first dip into the Bond franchise and what better place to start than with the man who embodied the British super spy for our generation, Pierce Brosnan. That's right, it's the best film based on an N64 game ever made! It's got stunts and gadgets galore, it's got Sean Bean, Robbie Coltrane and Judie Dench, it's got Bond driving a BMW (!) - It's exactly the same but somehow completely different as this week the Wreckfast Club presents: Goldeneye!

#52 - Whiplash

"Hey there, want to watch Whiplash?" "Umm, I don't know, what is it?" "Oh, it's a low budget, indie film about an aspiring jazz drummer played by the guy who played Mr. Fantastic in the fantastic 4 reboot and his abusive relationship with his chair throwing, private music school teacher played by J. Jonah Jameson." "Hmm, I'm not convinced. How much jazz and drumming is in this film?" "Loads. Of both." "Well that sounds awful."

 

And that's how conversations go when you try to convince people to give Whiplash a go, but give it a go they should because it's the best film about jazz drumming we've ever seen, and that's one tough market! Asking questions like, what exactly does it take to achieve greatness and how far are you willing to push or be pushed to get there? It's pretty ironic to hear this story told by two podcast hosts who complain about how hard it is to watch one film every other week. We also definitely knew this wasn't about the Metallica song when we started watching it, as this week, the Wreckfast Club presents: Whiplash
